VFX COMPOSITING BASICS
Conquer compositing for both live-action and greenscreen projects to realistically integrate CG elements into your final shot.
Set the stage for a successful compositing process: by setting up Nuke correctly. Learn how to set up your comp canvas, review Nuke’s color space processes and get familiar with how to efficiently build your node networks.WEEK 2 Image Integration Process - AOVs, Filters & Color
You’ll work on color grading your rendered CG elements to align them with live action plates. You’ll also match grain, blur and lens distortion from the live action plates to your CG elements using color channel analysis.WEEK 3 Image Integration Process - Depth, Shadows & Reflections
Shadows, reflections and depth are key elements that are required to make your shot look believable. You’ll work with Nuke’s powerful tools (like the Shuffle node) to control when and where you need to manipulate your images.WEEK 7 Plate Review, Cleanup & Comp Prep
The class moves on to greenscreen compositing. You’ll set up your Nuke workspace, import & review your shot materials and cleanup your live action background plate to begin the compositing process for this shot.WEEK 8 Understanding the Matte
Mattes are integral to the visual effects process. You’ll learn the history of optical compositing and how mattes were originally created by hand. You’ll also explore modern digital matte tools that visual effects artists use to create mattes.WEEK 9 Exploring the Keyers - Luma & Chroma
Keying is another essential toolset used to create mattes. This week you’ll build your own basic keyer using Nuke math nodes, and then look at the most-used Luma and Chroma keying techniques.
You’ll work on enhancing your live action plates through the selective use of matte painting. You’ll re-track your live action plate so that the Nuke camera is ready to have additional matte painted elements added to the plate.WEEK 5 Adding the Special FX
You’ll add key special FX to your shot this week, including live action elements like dust, debris and electric sparks.WEEK 6 Final Special FX, Tech Fixes & Final Comps
Your shot should be close to final, and this week, you’ll focus on working out technical fixes for your shot. Final render & final comp assembly of your full shot will also happen this week using Animation Mentor’s AMP Render Farm.Week 10 Tracking
You’ll review Primatte, Ultimatte and Nukes Image Based Keyer, three more industry standard keying tools for us to use with your greenscreen footage.WEEK 11 Finessing the Final Image
This week, you’ll push your shot compositing all the way to FINAL! Full shot comp renders will begin this week and will be rendered in preparation for final color work next week.WEEK 12 Paint Fix & Final Color Grading
In your final week you will wrap up by doing any tech fixes that require re-comps, and doing everything necessary to prepare our final elements for their final color grade and output.
