Tutorial: Animating Character Environmental Interaction

Animator Nathaniel Seymour walks through a full character and environment interaction using a personal short film project. He shows how a character reaches for a flower that’s just out of reach, then decides to pull down the entire plant it’s growing on rather than climb for it. Along the way, the tutorial covers overall timing, weight, secondary action, and the small details that make an environment feel like it’s actually reacting to a character’s movement.

Meet Nathaniel Seymour

Nathaniel is a 2009 graduate of the Animation Mentor Character Animation Program, with credits spanning visualization and character animation for film, TV, VR, and music videos. His work includes Dune: Part 1, Godzilla vs. Kong, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, and Clifford the Big Red Dog.

Setting Up the Story

Before touching any controls, Nathaniel lays out the scenario: a character, called Imp, is eyeing a flower growing just out of reach on a tall plant, something between a tree and a beanstalk. Climbing up is an option, but Imp decides it’s easier to grab the whole plant and yank it down to his level instead.

Nathaniel points out that starting with a clear goal like this makes every later choice easier, from how a character stands to how hard they pull. The plant itself was rigged simply, with a chain of joints running through it so it could bend and drag down convincingly once Imp took hold.

Blocking the Big Yank

With the goal set, Nathaniel blocks in Imp reaching up, smiling as he spots the flower, and grabbing on with both hands. Because the plant’s joints and Imp’s hands are separate objects, he keys the last hand contact frame first, then uses that as the starting point for the plant’s own downward motion.

One key technical detail: when animating the plant, hands, and stump moving together, Nathaniel switches the translation from object space to world space. Since multiple objects are selected at once, object space would send each one down along a different local axis, while world space keeps everything moving straight down together.

He also builds in a short beat where Imp holds the plant before yanking it, giving the pull some anticipation instead of having it happen immediately on contact.

Cleaning Up Timing in the Graph Editor

Copying and pasting keys across a few different controls doesn’t always go smoothly, and Nathaniel runs into exactly that: curves that copy in with an unwanted curved tangent, and selections that quietly fail to copy at all. His fix is simple and a little tedious: check the graph editor, compare the resulting curve to what the motion should look like, and copy and paste each control individually if a group copy doesn’t take.

It’s a good reminder that clean holds and sharp changes in direction, like the moment right before Imp yanks down, often need a manual pass on tangents rather than trusting the default curve.

Adding Weight and Physicality

Once the timing holds up, Nathaniel goes back through and adds weight to the rest of Imp’s body instead of leaving the pull isolated to the hands. Imp rises onto his toes during the windup, rotates forward slightly, and then drops back down through bent knees as he commits to the pull.

He also scales Imp’s body slightly wider at the bottom of the motion to avoid everything squashing together unnaturally, and makes sure the elbows get their own rotation keys since Imp’s arms are on IK controls.

Nathaniel notes that with a stylized, cartoony character like Imp, there’s more room to blend how a real person might lift something heavy, using both the legs and the back, since the proportions already invite some exaggeration. Making the Environment React

Pulling the plant down triggers a chain of environmental responses. As it comes down, the roots rise up out of the ground, and the ground itself splits open along edges Nathaniel modeled from simple cubes with adjusted vertices. He only bothers detailing the sections of ground that will actually be visible on camera, which keeps the shot manageable without extra unnecessary work.

Because the plant is animated with joints rather than IK, Nathaniel keeps its motion simple and mostly lets it follow along with Imp’s pull rather than adding independent secondary motion of its own.

Secondary Action: The Flower and the Debris

Once Imp has the plant on the ground, he leans in to smell the flower, and this is where a lot of the tutorial’s secondary action lives. Nathaniel animates the flower’s own reaction first, since it moves on simple joints and is easier to adjust before layering in Imp’s IK-driven hand and finger motion around it.

Rather than gripping the flower, Imp uses a single finger to gently guide it into position, a small choice meant to suggest he doesn’t want to damage it. When Imp gets close enough to sniff, Nathaniel scales part of the flower slightly to sell the sense of it being smelled, then resets the scale afterward. Loose twigs falling from the plant add another layer of secondary motion happening at the same time.

Separately, a handful of rocks burst out of the cracked ground as the plant comes down. Nathaniel treats this almost like a classic bouncing ball exercise: placing the rocks at their final resting spots first, then working backward to key their initial pop out of the ground, their roll, and a few bounces before they settle, using broken tangents in the graph editor to keep the bounces sharp rather than soft.

Finishing Touches and the Final Result

With the animation locked, Nathaniel brings the shot into After Effects to add smoke and dust kicked up by the roots, the cracking ground, and the rocks. He also adds a bit of background and pixel motion blur to round out the final look.

He wraps up by noting that this character’s reaction to finally having the flower will be the focus of a follow-up tutorial, picking up right where this one leaves off.
