In this tutorial, Animation Mentor graduate Nathaniel Seymour walks through a two character shot that pairs a small, fast rig with a large, heavy one. Using his own video reference, he shows how animation layers can add variety on top of a run cycle and how starting a walk from the midsection out can give a giant character believable weight. Viewers will come away with a practical process for layering secondary motion, staggering timing so poses do not feel identical, and matching a character’s proportions to how it moves.

Nathaniel is a 2009 graduate of the Animation Mentor Character Animation Program, with credits spanning visualization and character animation for film, TV, VR, and music videos. His work includes Dune: Part 1, Godzilla vs. Kong, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, and Clifford the Big Red Dog.
Starting from real reference
Seymour begins with video reference of himself and his niece running, since she has the kind of loose, energetic movement that fits a smaller, faster character. Rather than acting out both parts himself, he uses her footage for the small character and his own for the large one, which gives the two performances a genuine difference in energy instead of two versions of the same actor’s timing.
Watching the reference frame by frame, he points out that his niece is not doing a plain running cycle. She looks off to one side, raises her stride higher at points, and throws her arms up as if celebrating. Those small variations become the blueprint for the animation layer work that follows.
Setting up the two rigs
The shot uses two character rigs, labeled Smallie and Biggie in the display layer so they are easy to tell apart from the outliner. The small character already has a run cycle applied, borrowed from an existing cycle Seymour found and reused because the leg motion holds up well on its own.
He points out a common cycle problem: the last frame often duplicates the first, creating a tiny hitch. Trimming the cycle back by one frame, so it ends just before the repeat, removes that stutter. The character is then given a path to run along instead of running in place, so the shot has real distance and travel.
Building variety with animation layers
To add the head turns, arm raises, and other one-off motion on top of the base run cycle, Seymour creates an animation layer. He selects nearly every control on the character, leaving out only the root control, and builds the layer from that selection. This keeps the underlying cycle intact and untouched while the new layer carries only the extra motion.
He sets anchor keys before and after the main gesture so the character returns cleanly to its normal cycle pose. Between those anchors, he keys the head turning to look off to one side, the spine and shoulders following the head, and the arms lifting into a celebratory pose, all timed to overlap rather than move as a single block.
Layering hands and avoiding twinning
Hands get their own pass once the arms are moving. Seymour builds separate cupped, fisted, and spread hand poses and staggers when each one starts and finishes, since triggering both hands at exactly the same time makes them read as twins. He also notes a rig quirk where a control can spring back to its default pose unless a key is set more than once, something he simply repeats until the pose holds.
Timing differences carry into how the arms come down as well. An arm that took longer to rise is given a longer path back down, with a bit of overlap so the hand continues moving briefly after the rest of the arm has settled. That kind of staggered return is what keeps a layered pose from looking mechanical.
Animating the big character’s walk
For Biggie, Seymour starts the same way he starts most shots: by moving the midsection first to establish overall timing and travel distance before touching any other control. Once that read is right, he moves on to the legs, aligning their position with the direction the body is heading and staggering when each foot plants.
From there he layers in the knees, hip rotation, and the torso’s counter-rotation against the legs, building the walk from the ground up rather than posing the whole body at once.
Matching the arms to a natural gait
Reviewing his own reference video, Seymour notices that his arms swing on the same side as his legs rather than opposite them, an unconscious habit rather than a deliberate choice. He decides to keep that quirk in the animation since it is how he naturally moves, timing the arm’s swing back just as the opposite leg starts forward, with the shoulder rotating to support it.
A few frames later the elbow and then the hand follow in sequence, giving the arm overlap instead of moving as a single rigid unit. Because the character’s arm swings low enough to pass near the ground, he closes the hand into a loose fist as it nears the bottom of the swing so the fingers do not appear to drag or grind against the floor.
Facial expression without a mouth
Since this character rig has no mouth, Seymour relies on the eyebrows and nose to carry expression. As the eyebrows lift, the nose is animated to dip slightly, and the two move in opposite directions as the pose resolves. It is a small detail, but it gives the big character’s face some readable life despite its limited features.
Bringing both characters together
In the final version, the small character runs through the scene with the added head turn and arm raise, catching the big character’s attention. Biggie reaches out toward him, gets no response, and starts walking after him instead, using the walk cycle built earlier in the tutorial. Seen together, the contrast in scale, speed, and weight between the two characters is what sells the shot: a light, quick run against a slow, heavy stride, tied together by the same principles of layering, staggered timing, and honest reference.
