Want to speed up your animation workflow and experiment more flexibly in Maya? In this tutorial, iD Software Animator and Animation Mentor instructor Paul Allen breaks down how animBot’s Keyframe Manipulation Sliders help you quickly adjust timing, smooth out motion, and simplify dense key data without tedious manual editing.
Meet Paul Allen
Paul Allen has been a professional animator since 1997 and is currently a senior animator at id Software, known for the DOOM video game franchise. He started his career in television and was a character animation supervisor for the Nickelodeon classic, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. Paul has been a mentor at Animation Mentor since 2006 and currently teaches Animation Basics and Body Mechanics.

Efficient Keyframe Editing
Watch the video above to see Paul highlighting animBot’s tools in the Maya timeline and inside the graph editor. Hovering over each tool gives helpful mini-tutorial popups, making it easy to learn new features as you go.
He focuses on core daily-use functions:
- Ease In/Ease Out: Rapidly add natural start/stop acceleration to selected keys—just slide left or right to customize direction and amount of easing.
- Noise Wave: Inject subtle motion variety or vibration into dense keyframes.
- Smooth/Rough: Remove unwanted jitter or simplify curves for controlled polishing.
- Simplify/Bake Keys: Instantly reduce excessive keyframe clutter while keeping the shape and flow of your original animation.
Hands-On Demo
Paul demonstrates practical workflow:
- Starting with noisy, densely keyed animation, he applies the Noise Wave tool for a quick stagger.
- He uses Ease In/Ease Out sliders to automatically taper acceleration or deceleration—ideal for cleaning up performance or retiming sections.
- The Smooth tool lets him dial out excess motion, preserving just the “flavor” needed.
- With Simplify/Bake Keys, Paul interactively pulls down the complexity, keeping the motion but removing dozens of unnecessary keys.
Pro Tips
- Right-click any slider for more options and expanded controls.
- Adjust as little or as much as you want—animBot’s interactive workflow makes it easy to experiment and iterate.
- Take slow passes through workflow improvements, integrating one animBot tool at a time.
Paul’s takeaway: You don’t need every tool right away—learn a few key manipulation sliders until they’re natural parts of your workflow, and you’ll save hours in Maya while unlocking creative polish.
